Sophomore Break

Way back at the end of April/beginning of May Trent was on break between his Sophomore and Junior semesters. His semester breaks didn't seem to align with breaks with the kids from school, so we decided we'd just take kids out of school for a day and go and play.  Trent is really good about making sure he spends time with the kids each week, but we really don't do much as a family while Trent is in school. We decided that we'd go to Huston and see the space center and then go the the Kemah Boardwalk.  Houston is about 3 hours away, however with Andrew it took us about 5 hrs to get there. We were planning to leave early in the morning, but didn't actually get out of the house till after 9 am.  Our plan was to drive straight to the space center and spend the day there then go play at the boardwalk.

We didn't get to the space center till after 2:00 and it was closing for the day at 5:00.  We could have spent the entire day there!  They have two different shuttle rides to go one, but because of time we were only able to go on one of them. There was a lot to see and do there! We are hoping that we'll be able to get back there before we move.

The shuttle ride we went on took us to command central.  We saw the exact room the command central from Apollo 13 was in, it is still set up just as it was for that mission.  It was a long 3 flights of stairs up, but well worth the hike.  The second stop was a rocket.  Carter's face was the best when we walked into the hanger and he saw how massive it was!  I couldn't believe how big it was!

There were a few different shows that were playing, we tried to watch one of them....Hunter lasted exactly 2 mins. So he, Andrew, and I wandered around while the others enjoyed the movie.

After the space center we went and checked into our hotel and then headed down to Kemah, just 10 mins away, and wandered around the boardwalk.  We went to Bubba Gump's for dinner.  It was good, but kinda pricey for us. The kids really enjoyed sitting on the deck overlooking the water.  After dinner we wandered around for a bit, found a little playground and stopped to let the kids play for awhile.  There was a band playing and this little old couple were dancing, so cute!  It was a fun evening.  We headed back to the hotel after looking at all the rides and deciding what we'd ride in the morning

We (okay, so I) had a terrible night in the hotel.  Andrew just didn't sleep good, which meant I didn't sleep good. The others seemed to sleep just fine. I don't know what it is with kids in hotel rooms, but they seem to get up SO early!  Even with the dark shades on the windows they were up about 6 am.  The boardwalk didn't even open till 10:30 am so we had plenty of time to burn.  We went and got breakfast and took our time getting ready.  We found a little farmers market, and by little I mean like 10 vendors (maybe).  We found some yummy things to eat and some veggies and nuts to take home with us.  We were at the boardwalk before it even opened.  We didn't really want to spend all day there, so we told the kids they could choose 2 things to ride.  There aren't that many rides there, maybe 8, but there was 1 really big roller coaster that I was for sure Carter would want to go on.  You can buy wrist bands to do all the rides you want or buy ride tickets, we opted for tickets since we were only letting them choose two. All three of them chose the ride that takes you up and then drops you.  Since we were there so early they were the only ones on the ride.  After the 3 of them went on their ride Trent and Carter went off to ride the big roller coaster.  Hunter and Hanna decided that they HAD to ride the same ride again.  It is so fun to listen to them squeal as they are enjoying the ride.  After they were done we went to go find Trent and Carter.

That was the most intense roller coaster Carter had ever ridden.  It has been a pretty long time since he's really been on a big roller coaster (Disneyland '09 was the last time).  Here's some fun facts about the Boardwalk Bullet (found here):

  • 96' tall wooden coaster
  • 92 foot vertical drop
  • reaches speeds of 51mph
  • 3,236 feet long (Trent said it was one of the longest roller coaster's he's ever ridden)
  • 5 feet away from the water's edge of Galveston Bay
  • 800 passengers per hour
Carter loved it, but it was a little scary for him, he said he kept lifting out of his seat and Trent had to hold him down.  He said it made him want to puke.  But he'd do it again!
