One of the best things about moving to a new area is exploring our new surroundings. I got a 'Visit Colorado Springs' book so we would know what our new home has to offer and it has been SO fun visiting all the areas around us!
Since we moved in the dead of winter, and we live in an outdoor paradise, we still have many many things to discover! I was really surprised at the number of museums here. There is a Pioneer museum (that is free!), a ghost town museum, a mining museum, and then they have mansions that they've turned into museums. We've not seen any of the museums yet, but I just bought a voucher for the mining museum that we will go explore soon.
One of the very first weekends we were here we went and walked around Garden of the Gods. It was kinda warm outside, as in it wasn't snowing or terribly windy. We chose the paved path so we could keep Andrew warm in the stroller. Our neighbor girl, Hailey, came with us. (We had only been here two weeks and we have still not met her parents today, but they were ok with her coming with us---a little odd to me.) It was super pretty, I cannot wait for it to warm up--like real warm up, not warm for an hour and then cold for a day, gag--so we can go and explore some more! It is a free park with a really fun history.
After a week of kinda nice weather we decided to head up to the mountains and do a little hiking. We went to Helen Hunt Falls, they were totally frozen over still. We will be heading back after it thaws out a little bit. We decided that we'd try and drive to the top of Pikes Peak after we were done at the falls, it's only an hour drive up the mountain. However, we got to the check point 10 minuets too late, they apparently don't allow cars up after 3pm. We had no idea. We've not had decent weather since then so we've not tried to get up there again, but it is on our list to do.
On our way out of the canyon Trent spotted the Cliff Dwellings, so we decided to go check them out. We got there 2 hours before they were closing and were there till just before they closed. The kids LOVED it! They wandered around, climbed through opening, and chased each other. They had a blast getting dusty and dirty. There was hardly anyone there, which was super nice. They had a nice little gift shop and museum there as well. The kids love to wander gift shops, I do too, Trent hates it. We finished up our little adventure with a stop at Ruby's for some TX BBQ, not near as good as our favorite BBQ place in San Antonio, but it was very good (and may have made me miss TX even more)!
The weekend of Valentines Day there was an ice carving festival in a little town just over an hour away in Cripple Creek. We thought it might be fun to check out. It was a very nice day, Cripple Creek is up in the mountains, but the sun was shinning. There were a few people still working on their carvings, and some there were covered to protect them from the sun. It was so fun! Well worth the drive up there. There was a slide made out of ice that the kids went on over and over again. The first time down Hunter fell off his little foam sled and decided he didn't like it at all. I convinced him to try it again and he loved it! We got there pretty early in the day and it wasn't too busy, but as we were leaving it was starting to get really packed.
There is still so much more to discover here, I've made a list of all the things we want to do before we leave in 10 months. Some way we will find a way to fit it all in.
